Training for Trainers

Training for Trainers from H2The provision of internal training can enable experienced staff to impart essential skills and knowledge to their colleagues. However, training can only help an organisation to achieve its strategic objectives if it is well planned and delivered, and if the time and resources invested are worthwhile and cost-effective.

Individuals wishing to improve their training skills are often interested in finding ways to:

  • Minimise their nerves and improve their overall confidence as trainers
  • Project confidence and credibility to the training participants
  • Plan and prepare themselves to ensure that the training achieves its objectives and is rated highly by all participants
  • Keep the training to time - avoiding unplanned overrunning
  • Involve, inspire and captivate course participants
  • Handle difficult situations, and awkward questions
  • Accurately evaluate the effectiveness of their training, without being overly hard on themselves.

It is easy to underestimate the skill involved in delivering a focused and informative training session that captures the attention of all participants and achieves its objectives. And yet, very often subject experts are expected to achieve all this, just on the basis of their experience or specialist knowledge. With some careful preparation and the development of specific training and facilitation techniques, anyone can improve their skills and confidence to deliver high quality training that fulfils its purpose.

"The only thing worse than training your employees and having them leave is not training them and having them stay." Henry Ford

How to spot an excellent trainer

Is the person:

  1. Well prepared - they may be an expert in their subject, but have they invested time into preparing a logical, dynamic session that leads the participants through a process of effective learning?

  2. Motivated, positive and interesting - even a supposedly dull topic can be trained in an engaging way if the trainer knows how. Are they involving the training participants in discussions and practical exercises to illustrate and consolidate the learning, and to keep them interested?

  3. Adaptable and responsive to the needs and interests of the participants - whilst the trainer may have a particular training agenda to follow, are they able to adapt their programme and delivery style to match the needs and interests of the participants?

  4. Creative and engaging - as well as having a training style that is appropriate to the subject matter, are they able to integrate a range of participative activities that stimulates the interest of the participants and ensures that real learning takes place?

  5. Getting results - whilst some trainers are rated highly for being interesting and charismatic, the most valuable judgement to make is whether the trainer is able to facilitate the specified learning outcomes.
