Communication
Effective communication is an essential pre-requisite for success in any organisation. The ability to communicate clearly, confidently and respectfully is central to any individual’s personal effectiveness at work. Improving communication skills within an organisation can lead to better customer relations, increased confidence and motivation, fewer misunderstandings and queries, demonstrable time savings and an increase in overall efficiency and productivity.
Individuals wishing to improve their communication skills are often interested in finding ways to:
- Enhance their confidence to communicate effectively with colleagues, managers, team members, reports, customers, suppliers and other stakeholders
- Reduce the amount of time taken to sort out misunderstandings
- Order their thoughts and express themselves clearly and concisely
- Make their communication more meaningful, persuasive and compelling
- Achieve the desired outcomes of their communication with others
Good communication is at the heart of every business relationship. It is a two-way process that not only involves the ability to express oneself clearly through verbal and non-verbal communication, but also involves skills in active listening, questioning, assertiveness and empathy. Although it is clear that some people appear to be "born communicators" the skills of effective communication can definitely be learnt, with some amazing results.
"You can have brilliant ideas, but if you can't get them across, your ideas won't get you anywhere" Lee Iacocca 1924- , former CEO of Ford and famous for reviving the Chrysler brand
How to spot effective communication
Are the people involved:
-
In rapport - is there is obvious mutual respect - are they genuine and trustworthy in what they say, even if in disagreement or conflict?
-
Clear about their purpose - do they know what they want from the conversation are they clear about this?
-
Congruent - does their body language match their words, and is it appropriate for the situation?
-
Sharing the floorspace - are they giving an equal amount of time and opportunity for contributing to the conversation?
-
Actively listening - are they paying full attention to each other's verbal and non-verbal communication?
-
Questioning - are they clarifying and probing to check each other's understanding of both words and any hidden meanings?
-
Summarising - are they recapping to ensure mutual understanding?
-
Focused on a conclusion - are they working towards a clear outcome, including any follow-up interactions that are necessary/desired?
