Coaching and Mentoring

Coaching and Mentoring Training from H2In-house coaching and mentoring is used increasingly as part of staff development and personnel practice. For some this may be part of a wider drive to improve performance and effectiveness; for others it may be a component of a training and induction programme for new employees; or a way of providing support and development for under-represented groups within the workforce.

Individuals wishing to improve their coaching or mentoring skills are often interested in finding ways to:

  • Improve their overall confidence and credibility as coaches and/or mentors
  • Plan and implement structured sessions to ensure that the coaching/mentoring achieves its objectives and is rated highly by their participants
  • Work within professional boundaries, knowing when/where to refer on when necessary
  • Incorporate coaching/mentoring into their regular line-management process
  • Use coaching and mentoring to improve performance/tackle under-achievement
  • Use peer-coaching and mentoring to support their colleagues.

It is easy to underestimate the skill involved in delivering focused and helpful coaching/mentoring sessions that achieve their objectives and yet feel relaxed and conversational to their participants. Very often subject experts and managers/team leaders are expected to achieve this, just on the basis of their seniority or specialist knowledge. With some careful preparation and the development of specific coaching and mentoring techniques, anyone can improve their skills and confidence to deliver high quality supportive sessions that fulfil their purpose.

"One of the greatest values of mentors is the ability to see ahead what others cannot see and to help them navigate a course to their destination." John C. Maxwell, Author and Speaker

How to spot an excellent coach/mentor

Is the person:

  1. Well prepared - they may be an expert in their subject, but have they invested time into preparing a logical, session that leads the participants through a process of effective discovery and learning towards a helpful conclusion?

  2. Empathetic and inspirational - are they actively listening to the participants' experiences and thought processes, and able to reflect back useful insights and feedback?

  3. Adaptable and responsive to the needs and interests of the participants - whilst the coach/mentor may have a particular agenda to follow, are they able to adapt their sessions to match the pace, interests and needs their participants?

  4. Creative and engaging - are they able to devise and introduce a range of participative activities that stimulate the interest of the participants to ensure that progress takes place between sessions?

  5. Getting results - whilst some coaches and mentors are rated highly for being interesting and inspirational, the most valuable judgement to make is whether they are able to facilitate specified goals.
