Assertiveness
In order to achieve maximum potential, individuals need to develop an ability to communicate clearly and effectively. This requires a high level of self-awareness and sensitivity to the impact of their behaviour on others. It is also about being able to respond confidently and professionally in a range of situations, including those that are difficult or stressful, all whilst respecting the needs and interests of both parties.
Individuals wishing to become more assertive at work are usually interested in finding ways to:
- Resist the pressure of excessively domineering colleagues, customers or managers
- Stand up to, or protect themselves from bullying or aggressive behaviour
- Exert more personal influence/control in specific situations whilst maintaining positive on-going working relationships
Learning how to become more assertive is not about becoming more dominant or forceful, but more about developing a style of communication that is confident, balanced and respectful to everyone's needs and interests. This will in turn help to promote healthy, honest and trusting relationships that form the foundation of positive teamwork and enhanced productivity - no matter what level or role a person has within an organisation.
"The basic difference between being assertive and being aggressive is how our words and behaviour affect the rights and wellbeing of others." Sharon Anthony Bower
How to spot assertive behaviour
Is the person:
- Confident and self-assured, but grounded and aware of their own limitations?
- Calm, relaxed and professional even when under pressure?
- Able to demonstrate empathy for others' situations?
- Respectful of others' positions/views even if different or challenging?
- Able to express personal views, needs or wants clearly and directly without causing offence or undermining the other person's self-esteem?
- Able to stay focused on what's really important - maintaining the on-going relationship whilst achieving a win/win solution?
