What's the big deal about Meetings and Facilication training and Training for Trainers?

One of the most common frustrations reported in the workplace is the waste of time and energy given to poorly managed meetings, and ineffective training. And yet, there are so many benefits to be gained if the time is used wisely. There are some basic practicalities that a meeting chair, facilitator or trainer will be able to implement, such as keeping the meeting/session to time, following the agenda as agreed, and ensuring that someone keeps a clear record. The more advanced facilitation and training skills involve observing and responding appropriately to the group dynamics, so that the desired outcomes are comfortably and happily reached within the allotted time.

Individuals wishing to improve their meeting, facilitation or training skills are often interested in finding ways to:

      • Make the best possible use of everyone's time and talents to achieve desired outcomes
      • Manage and control a meeting/training session without dominating the proceedings or 'upsetting people'
      • Develop and maintain more personal confidence and credibility in meetings/training sessions
In addition to taking care of the practical issues, a skilled facilitator/trainer will have well-developed inter-personal skills including the ability to summarise; to encourage equal participation; to keep participants focused; to give feedback; to clarify and work through conflict; and to keep the discussion moving in the right direction. They will also be able to intervene when necessary, in a way that enhances the group's problem solving, decision making, and creativity - rather than distracting from it, or over-controlling it.
