How to manage someone who doesn't work within the boundaries of their role, or the aims and objectives of the project…

Dear H2

I manage someone who does not work within the boundaries of their role, or the aims and objectives of the project! However, they are also very skilled, which is positive for the team/outcomes.

How can I get the best out of them?

R

Dear R

Although it is great to have a skilled team member, don't forget that unless the skills are put to use on the right things, and in the right direction they are actually useless.

You say that this person's skills are positive for the team/outcomes, but it sounds like this fact has become a barrier to you addressing the problem. Try to remember that if they are not working within the boundaries or the aims and objectives of the project, then they are unlikely to be a good role model/influence on others.

You could try talking privately to the person as soon as possible, and whilst pointing out how and why their skills are appreciated, help them to understand the importance of their responsibility to work within given boundaries, and towards a common aim.

Best of luck!
